In this process, approximately 80% of the image data is thrown out immediately as the image is compressed and stored on the memory card in a ready-to-use format. When you take the photo, the camera makes some decisions about lighting, color, contrast, etc… and then does some instant editing. When you shoot in JPEG, you have a finished image right away.
